Android 3.0 Honeycomb: The Best Android Platform for Larger Screen Sizes

Honeycomb is the newest version of Android (3.0) and is the first version designed for tablets instead of smartphones. Major Android tablets being released this year such as the Motorola Xoom and T-Mobile G-Slate will come installed with honeycomb.

The Android platform includes an operating system based upon the Linux kernel, a GUI, a web browser and end-user applications that can be downloaded. Although the initial demonstrations of Android featured a generic QWERTY smartphone and large VGA screen, the operating system was written to run on relatively inexpensive handsets with conventional numeric keypads.

Few days back we had reported about Android 3.0 Honeycomb ported to NookColor to enhance its beauty and make it first tablet to have honeycomb running (unofficially). Now here is good news for those Nook color owner eagerly waiting for instructions & honeycomb image file for Nook Color.

The whole thing is based on the honeycomb emulator images, the B&N V1.1 kernel+modules+driver, pieces from the upcoming CM7. As usual do it as your own risk.Download Nook Color Android 3.0 Honeycomb Image.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb is Google's fifth update in a row, Android 1.6 Donut, 2.0 Eclair, 2.2 Froyo and 2.3 Gingerbread came before it. Honeycomb is a rather unique in a way though, this is a tablet only operating system and as far as Google tells us, it won't be making its way to smartphones. One notable difference in Honeycomb is that there's no longer a need for hardware buttons, they're built into the OS itself. On the bottom left of the screen there are three software buttons: back, home and the app switcher button for multitasking (switching between running apps). On the bottom right you can find some addition info and functionality: power, internet connection status and a notification bar. Within the notification bar you can see download progress, music controls, incoming message profile pictures and so on. There are multiple widget options included with Honeycomb, so you can fill your homescreen with various widgets which will of course offer you all sorts of information and functionality. There's of course your app drawer included here and tons of other functionality within the OS itself. Google really hopes Honeycomb will become a huge success and offer consumers new and functional way to use their tablets.

This extension enables you to set an alarm programmatically for devices > API Level 9, Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Required permission: com.android.alarm.permission.SET_ALARM Note: You will have to build the app to be able to test it, because the companion app does not offer the required permission.

While developers are already excited about the huge opportunities in android development, Google is continuing to encourage them by giving them access to the new APIs in Android 3.0. This will let them test their apps and get ready for the new set of android devices that will run on this OS for mobile phones and tablets. However, as Google warns, developers will do well to remember that this is just a preview and hence the android 3.0 library will consist of non-final APIs, which might change in behavior or availability in the final release.

Connectivity is another area where android 3.0 makes a lot of promise, as it will provide built-in support for media Transfer Protocol, for syncing media files through through USB devices. It will also provide improved Wi-Fi connectivity, connectivity through full keyboards and support for Bluetooth tethering.
