In writer Juhi Chaturvedi's fourth collaboration with director Sircar, an ageing parent with health issues is the source of both humour and drama in the eponymous protagonist's life. Piku addresses the challenges children in cities face as they struggle to attain a balance between their professional and personal lives. Like in the surprise hit Vicky Donor, Chaturvedi again taps into the "little idiosyncrasies" of the Bengali community. "I don't want to pin it down to them but it comes naturally to me to write about them," says Chaturvedi, a Punjabi who has grown up with Bengali neighbours. The entry of another man, Rana (Irrfan), a 30-something owner of a taxi service company, as Piku's love interest adds another dimension to the father-daughter relationship.
