Using Software Update is faster and easier than upgrading by other methods, and it might require less storage space to download and install the upgrade. Software Update shows only upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.
If the macOS that you want isn't compatible with your Mac or the currently installed macOS, the installer will let you know, and the App Store might prevent you from downloading it. For example, it might dim the Get button, say that the macOS is not compatible with this device, or say that the requested version of macOS is not available.
Download Mac Os X Without App Store
Although we were primarily focusing on macOS Catalina in this article, you can follow the same procedure to download macOS Mojave via the Dosdude tool and older versions on to your computer. DosDude1 also offers a similar utility for High Sierra and Sierra.
Thanks to this patcher tool, you will still be able to install macOS Catalina on an unsupported Mac, as long as you meet the hardware requirements for the update. Also, if you have multiple Macs but limited internet data, you can download the full installer as a one-time step, transfer it to a USB flash drive and use it as bootable media for installation on other Macs.
Thank you so much. I wasted hours trying to download the installer and then had the good fortune to find this article. It was very frustrating to find the roadblocks Apple has installed for what should be a simple, straightforward process for those of us who have no interest in becoming programmers. Much obliged!
I had Mountain Lion on my macbook pro and I wanted to reinstall it. So I formated the hard drive and tried to use "Reinstall OS X" from restore hd. I only forgot one thing, this version of system was bought by my friend and with his Apple ID. I had bought 10.6 I thing but there is no way to downgrade. How can I solve this? I dont know anybody else with mac and I dont have any contact on that friend. I dont have Time Machine backup.
I sent them the informations and now I am waiting for the answer. I hope they have way to do it without another mac.. if yes, Ill put it here. If not, Ill just need to find somebody with mac.. Really thanks for helping me sir. I was amazed how fast you were to answer me.
You can't reinstall Mountain Lion without knowing your friend's Apple ID and password. In other words, you had been using an illegal copy of ML. You need to purchase your own. It's only $20. Apple will not help you reinstall ML from another user's account.
2) Once the install is complete, your Mac will be 10.6.3 at the newest since that was the last version released on disk. You must then download and install the 10.6.8 Combo Update to get the App Store installed.
3) Launch the App Store and login with your Apple ID and password, which is the same one you use to login to these forums. Purchase Mountain Lion. It will download and automatically launch the installation. With a legal copy under your Apple ID, you will always be able to get it again in the future without paying for it again.
I purchased the snow leopard on app store so sadly I do not own its DVD. I would love to buy it but apple didnt probably leave any way to get to app store. I mean.. I get it, how often does situation when you would need to acces it different way than from your computer occur?
Oh sorry.. I bought it with Snow Leopard, I purchased Lion. My bad.. I just never remember the names.. but still.. I do not own any OS X DVD.. so I guess there is no way to do it? Isnt there any way to downgrade without the dvd?
What did your Mac originally come with? If it shipped with Lion, then you cannot install Snow Leopard at all. Instead, restart and hold down the Command+Option+R keys to do an Internet Recovery. This will download the entire version of Lion your Mac shipped with and reinstall it. It will also create a new Recovery partition.
I'm currently running the latest version of macOS Mojave and have Logic Pro X version 10.4.4 installed. I would like to upgrade Logic to the newest compatible version. However, the newest version the App Store is finding requires macOS Catalina and won't give me the option to download a newer version of Logic that is compatible with Mojave. I cannot realistically upgrade this Mac to Catalina or Big Sur because I still rely on a 32-bit Mac app that won't be updated to a 64-bit app. Is there a way I can download a newer version of Logic Pro X without upgrading my operating system?
First we moved my current version of Logic Pro X to the trash. The App Store recognized that I didn't have it installed, but it still wouldn't download the newest compatible version. It kept saying I needed to be running Catalina (which as I stated above, isn't an option for me). The Apple technician talked to his colleagues and said he wouldn't be able to bypass the app store to send me a different version, but that's when my idea came in.
I had previously downloaded a 10.5.1 trial version of Logic Pro X (which I got from the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, getting the DMG from their backup of Apple's official website dated October 30th, 2020). I installed the trial, and we started it to confirm that it was 10.5.1. It was, and then we went back into the app store. It still showed the download button, as if it wasn't installed, but this time when I clicked it, it gave me the option to download the newest compatible version for macOS Mojave (10.5.1). It began to download and install, and though it took a hot minute to finish, it successfully finished installing the app. When I opened Logic Pro X again, it was still 10.5.1, and it indicated it was no longer a trial version. So needless to say, I successfully upgraded Logic to 10.5.1 for Mojave without needing to upgrade to Catalina. I hope this helps someone else who might need this info!
You may also encounter issues if you are trying to download an older version of macOS that your Mac cannot support. Usually when Apple introduces a new Mac it will not be able to run the version of macOS that shipped before the one installed on that Mac. The older macOS might not support certain components in that Mac, for example.
However, when Apple introduced Mojave the Mac App Store changed, and these installers can no longer be searched for or found in the purchased section of the store. (Although we do have redirect links in the section above to each of the relevant pages on the Mac App Store.)
If the old version of the OS you are after predates Snow Leopard and you have a developer account you might be able to get it from developer.apple.com/downloads. If you search within the OS X category you should see downloads for all versions of OS X, at least from version 10.3 to 10.6.

You can't really download the OS X El Capitan installer app without the App Store.app easily. You can download the raw (unverified) pkg installer though, but to verify it and convert it to a legit OS X Installer.app App Store.app and a newer OS X system is required again. So simply downloading it on a Windows system won't help.
After configuring your system open App Store.app and download OS X El Capitan. If you haven't purchased it previously use the answer in How to download OS X El Capitan from the App Store even if never downloaded before macOS Sierra was released or purchased is grayed out.
If you have set your Mac to allow apps only from the App Store and you try to install an app from elsewhere, your Mac will say that the app can't be opened because it was not downloaded from the App Store.*
